Mercedes-Benz's trailblazer for the electric era - the fully electric EQS sedan - is getting a thorough facelift.
Since the launch of the EQS - and then its electric siblings later on - Mercedes-Benz has continuously worked to level up its expertise in realm of electrification. Innovations have been incorporated not just into the EQS sedan range, but also into the EQE sedan, EQS SUV and the EQE SUV.
Now, in 2024, the upgrades that are set to come to the EQS are promising to be extremely extensive - with improvements in style, range and comfort.
Typically, Mercedes-EQ vehicles are distinguishable by their iconic black radiator grille, connected to the vehicle's headlights. The latest update, however, sees the EQS getting a new face - which, contrarily, returns it to the look of more traditional Mercs.
Specifically, a new radiator cover with chrome applications will come as standard for models in the Business Class Line, with the firm's iconic horizontal slats creating a contrast to the black surrounding. The finishing touch is one we're all too familiar with: A standing star at the front of the hood, appearing for the first time ever on an EQS.
The EQS sedan already has one of the longest ranges for an electric car. However, thanks to an increased battery capacity of approximately 10kWh with this facelift, the car will soon be able to cover more distance before needing to be plugged in.
Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz has also shared that it has plans in the future for a special function which will be able to maintain the car's brake system. Considering that the EQS' brake discs are used less often compared to in combustion models - due to the high proportion of recuperation - the maintenance function will allow for the automatic application of the pads to the discs from time to time.
Coming to the car's interior, the car's new cabin amplifies the high quality details of the vehicle. Ventilation nozzles on the B-pillars now have a frame made from galvanised chrome, while the additional cushion in the rear is enhanced with Nappa leather piping.
There are also upgrades in comfort, on top of those extended to the car's styling and range.
The new EQS can be fitted with an optional Extended Rear Luxury Lounge Pack, which features a special slanted footrest. This is located on the rails of the front seat, boosting comfort for the rear passenger.
On top of the footrest, another notable detail of the pack is the ability of the passenger seat to be folded forward. The backrest in the rear can also be adjusted up to 39 degrees, increasing the amount of space.
A rear seat package will also be fitted into the EQS as standard. This package enables users to adjust the angles of the backrest from 27 to 36 degrees with just a touch of a button. Additionally, there are five millimetres more of foam in the backrest, and a cover that is detached from the side bolsters, both of which ensure a softer seating experience.
Further updates speak to the holistic level of enhancement that the EQS is now benefitting from - starting with the fitment of Merc's stunning MBUX Hyperscreen as standard in the model. The eye-watering feature sees three displays merged under a single glass piece, spanning over 141cm wide.
Additionally, further alterations to the car's powertrain will augment the efforts of the larger battery to increase the car's range.
Firstly, a standard heat pump boosts efficiency, redirecting waste heat generated from the electric drive and the high-voltage battery towards the cabin for interior heating. This reduces the need for the battery to power the heater, increasing the overall range.
Furthermore, a Disconnect Unit (DCU) in the 4MATIC models helps to decouple the electric motor on the front axle depending on the driving situation and required performance. And as a final note for the car's improved range, the recuperation level of the EQS has also been increased, allowing for more energy to be recovered. On this note, the EQS' braking system has also been optimised, offering better pedal feel due to the modified brake force cylinder used.
Interesting, Merc states that multiple updates made to the EQS' infotainment system were done using over-the-air technology (OTA) - including the YouTube web app, a digital travel guide, and the addition of a Dolby Atmos sound system. Speaking of wireless tech, the EQS can now also be fitted with a KEYLESS-GO comfort package, enabling key sharing and the use of a Digital Vehicle Key.
Mercedes-Benz states that the updates implemented on the facelifted EQS sedan are only the beginning for the firm. Looking ahead, other models built atop of the the bespoke EVA2 platform will also benefit from similar improvements.
