Subaru sure knew how to turn heads at the Singapore Motor Show 2024, which ran from 11 to 14 January.
Taking centre stage was the Subaru Crosstrek e-Boxer, WRX Sedan, and WRX Wagon with GT trims. The Subaru BRZ STI was also in the limelight. These were unveiled by Mr. Glenn Tan, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Tan Chong International Limited, on the first day of the show.
What's new
Subaru Crosstrek I-S EyeSight E-boxer Hybrid GT Edition
In this lineup, Subaru injects the new 2023 Crosstrek Hybrid with more zeal and flair through the addition of the limited GT Edition trim. This is also available in the e-Boxer 2.0i-S EyeSight Hybrid model.
With the unique GT styling kit, the exterior of the Crosstrek e-Boxer includes an aggressive front, rear, and side under spoilers, revised 18-inch alloy wheels and a new roof spoiler that boosts aesthetics and aerodynamics.
This special GT Edition is equipped with the enhanced EyeSight 4.0 driver assist system, which according to Subaru, fulfils Level 2 semi-autonomous capabilities with new safety innovations. An added wide-angle camera supplements the upgraded stereo cameras to detect more of the surroundings. Together, these enhanced sensors enable intuitive preventive safety features that help drivers avoid collisions from multiple angles.
The enhanced EyeSight 4.0 offers expanded pre-collision preparedness and new capabilities through the:
- Lane Centering Function keeps the vehicle centred in its lane while Adaptive Cruise Control adjusts speeds based on the lead vehicle. The enhanced Adaptive Cruise Control also maintains a safe distance from the lead vehicle, automatically adjusting speeds as needed.
- Lane Departure Prevention is added to Lane Departure Warning. This new function gently steers the vehicle back if it senses the vehicle drifting out of its lane unintentionally at speeds above 60km/h.
Subaru BRZ STI
What is also new is the Subaru BRZ, now with the STI Kit. This exceptional BRZ model features an exclusive body kit and spoilers that boldly amplify styling and high-speed handling.
The exclusive STI body kit enhances the BRZ's aerodynamics for greater high-speed stability, allowing sharper, more agile directional changes. The crowning glory is the exclusive carbon-fibre rear spoiler that expands downforce across the rear axle. Combining wind tunnel-honed composite curves with ultra-lightweight materials enables new levels of handling dexterity and stability.
Forester e-Boxer Hybrid and Forester GT Edition
Blending eye-catching styling cues with the Forester's hallmark user-friendly robustness, the GT Edition stretches boundaries through striking aesthetics and rally-bred handling. Available for the 2.0i-L EyeSight and e-Boxer 2.0i-S EyeSight Hybrid models, this variant takes the model to new heights of athletic style and prestige.
Signature additions such as front and rear spoilers, revised side skirts, bespoke 18-inch wheels and other air-optimised elements boost aesthetics while preserving rugged capability. Inside, diamond-pattern quilted leather seats strike the perfect balance of sporty edge and luxury. An embossed GT logo adds exclusive distinction.
Like the GT Edition of the Subaru Crosstrek I-S EyeSight e-Boxer Hybrid, the new Foresters are equipped with the enhanced EyeSight 4.0. Apart from the above-mentioned two new capabilities, the improved Eyesight 4.0 also allows for:
- Autonomous Emergency Steering, which helps to steer the car away from a vehicle or obstacle in front to avoid an accident (up to 80km/h)
What's coming
Prototypes of the GT Editions of the Subaru WRX Sedan and the Subaru WRX Wagon were unveiled at the Singapore Motor Show. While not immediately available for purchase, these are a sneak peek into exclusive models set to join Subaru's performance range later in 2024.
Aggressive aerodynamic extensions to the front, sides, rear complement of the new 2024 Subaru WRX GT Edition, fuse seamlessly with their STI grille. The striking exterior also hints at the performance-tuned chassis refinements within.
The brain behind the designs
Subaru had collaborated with its designated designer, Masahiko "Jack" Kobayashi, from world-renowned design house Giken Co. Ltd, on these projects. The collaborations birthed the Subaru GT Edition lineup, the Forester E-Boxer Hybrid and the Forester GT Edition.
With credentials including over 12 iconic Subaru production cars globally and the legendary WRX STI, his vision emphasises Forester's personality.
Giken is renowned globally for automotive styling kits and bringing concepts to reality. Kobayashi was part of the original team behind iconic Subaru production car designs for over 12 models, including the legendary WRX STI. His involvement in developing GT elements for select Asia-Pacific Subaru vehicles ensures their authenticity to the brand's racing spirit.
