Volkswagen reveals the new California

Summer is on its way over in Europe, and Volkswagen has just the car for those looking for adventure in the great outdoors.
Measuring in at a total of 5,173mm long and 1,941mm wide, the new California is 269mm longer and 39mm wider than its predecessor.
And there’s more than just more space available with this new campervan: All versions of the New California now get a pop-up roof with a front window and large front opening, alongside two side windows in the bellows, and sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle, allowing both sides of the vehicle can also be used as an open-air terrace when stopped at a campsite.
Also new for this Volkswagen California is the fact that the second row can be had with individual seats instead of a rear bench seat, a move that means the vehicle can now easily transport bicycles, and the cabin can be set up according to personal preferences when the vehicle is parked up.
A total of three drivetrain options are being offered for the new California.
The range starts with four-cylinder diesel unit that produces a total of 148bhp, while a 201bhp four-cylinder petrol drivetrain is also offered. New for the California, meanwhile, is a 241bhp plug-in hybrid option that utilises a 1.5-litre unit. The all-electric range and battery size of this drivetrain is yet to be confirmed, although we are expecting it to be the same 19.7kWh battery that does duty in the plug-in hybrid Tiguan.
The Volkswagen California is offered with six seats (2+2 individual seats in the second and third rows), alongside space for two to sleep within its pop-up roof in the base 'Beach' trim.
Pick the 'Beach Tour' California and you'll get additional features including rotating and height-adjustable driver and front passenger seats as well as with three individual seats in the rear, alongside two folding chairs that can be hidden away in the boot lid - a combination that creates additional sleeping space for two in the living area.
The 'Beach Camper' California, meanwhile, also offers seating for five, but comes with a compact mini-kitchen equipped with a single-ring gas cooker, a cutlery drawer and additional storage space.
Opt for the 'Coast' California and you'll get your campervan with two individual seats in the rear alongside a full-fledged kitchenette equipped with cabinets, a sink, single-ring gas cooker, as well as a refrigerator.
Finally, a 'Ocean' California is available, complete with Melange Raven seat fabric made from recycled material, seat heating for the driver and front passenger seats, an auxiliary air heater, automatic air conditioner, a large roof stowage box above the load compartment and background lighting in the kitchenette.
Pre-sales of the New Volkswagen California will start in June 2024 and the first deliveries will take place in the second half of the year for European markets.
