A new BMW X3 is on the horizon.
The firm has announced that its quintessential compact premium SAV is now undergoing final tuning of its chassis control and driver assistance systems at the BMW Group test centre in Miramas, France.
The new, fourth generation of the X3 (catch our review of the outgoing car here) will be offered with a range of combustion engines alongside plug-in hybrid options. No additional details of drivetrain options are yet available, although BMW does reveal that the car is set to come with a drag coefficient of 0.27.
The SAV is additionally set to get a wider track and reduced lift at its rear axle, while its body rigidity has been increased. Also improved for the new X3 is increased directional stability and a more direct steering ratio, while extensively modified anti-roll bars are now utilised to improve cornering dynamics without compromising ride comfort. These should pair with new electronically controlled shock absorbers (available as an added option).
BMW states that the vehicle has already undergone extensive testing on snow and ice, as well as in extremely hot regions and off the road as part of its preparation for series production. The SAV's suitability for everyday use was additionally tested and refined in urban stop-and-go traffic as well as on winding country roads, highways, and selected racetracks.
The X3 is now receiving its finishing touches at the test track in Miramas in order to have its longitudinal and lateral acceleration, suspension and damping, steering precision, and braking behaviour all analysed and optimised.
BMW states that the new X3 is set to make its debut in the coming weeks.
