Just five months after announcing that the Polestar 4 would have the smallest carbon footprint of any Polestar to date, Polestar has now announced that the total cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of the Polestar 3 now stands at 24.7 tCO2e.
For comparison, the carbon footprint of the Polestar 4 currently stands at 19.4 tCO2e, while the carbon footprint for the Polestar 2 was pegged at 23.1tCO2e in June of 2023 (for the 'Long range Dual motor' variant). Polestar states that the figures prove that action can be taken to reduce the climate impact of large SUVs.
The majority of greenhouse gas emissions attributed to the Polestar 3 are said to stem from the extraction and processing of various materials - aluminium and steel - used to build the car, as well as the extraction and processing of materials for its battery. Polestar's Lifecycle Assessment places material production and refining at 68% of the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of the car.
It further states that it is continuing to implement existing solutions and advocate for emerging solutions in order to further bring down the carbon footprint of its vehicles. Measures that have been adopted include the use of aluminium produced using renewable electricity, while emerging solutions also include the use of steel made with renewable energy. The firm is also exploring solutions related to electronics, tyres, and thermoplastics.
The firm has additionally taken learnings from its moves to reduce the carbon footprint of the Polestar 2 and applied them to the Polestar 3. These include the use of renewable energy for the production of 81% of the Polestar 3's aluminium, as well as its lithium-ion battery cell. These moves are said to have eliminated a total of 8.5tCO2e from the vehicle.
Manufactured initially at Volvo Cars' Chengdu factory in China, additional production of the Polestar 3 is slated to start in South Carolina, U.S.A, in the middle of 2024. Both these manufacturing plants use 100% renewable electricity.
