Volvo publishes its Life Cycle Assessment of the EX30

Five months after Polestar published its first Life Cycle Assessment for the Polestar 4 and found that the all-electric SUV coupe will come with the lowest carbon footprint of all its cars to date, Volvo has now published its Life Cycle Assessment of the Volvo EX30 (available to read here), and similarly found that the crossover has the smallest carbon footprint of any fully electric Volvo car to date.
The Volvo EX30 is said to have a total carbon footprint of 23 tonnes per 200,000km, a value said to be 60% less than the petrol-powered XC40.
The carbon footprint report is said to covers the car's life cycle, starting with the extraction and refining of raw materials and ending with the car's end of life. Volvo states that using wind-based electricity to charge the EX30 substantially reduces the carbon footprint compared with global or European electricity mixes by approximately 42% and 22% respectively, underlining the need to accelerate investments in renewable energy infrastructure globally for electric cars to reach their full climate potential.
The Volvo EX30 already utilises the largest proportion of recycled materials of any Volvo so far, with one quarter of its aluminium and one fifth of its steel derived from recycled material. 17% of the car's plastics, from interior components to exterior bumpers, are also made from recycled material. Volvo states that the Volvo EX30 equipped with the lithium iron phosphate battery has a 'cradle-to-gate' (that is, the sum of emissions produced during the production of materials and the car, but without the emissions from the use and end-of-life phases) impact estimated to be at 14.8 tonnes.
Volvo further states that it plans to reduce this impact by collaborating with its suppliers across its entire value chain. The firm is already working to reduce the emissions associated with battery manufacturing by replacing electricity usage during cell manufacturing with renewable energy sources.
