Since serving its original function as a military base when it was built back in 1936, Gillman Barracks has undergone significant transformation. After leaving behind its military roots in the 90s, it has transformed into a vibrant arts cluster that features art galleries and F&B outlets.
And now, there's a new enhancement - The Southern Depot.
Marking its official inauguration this weekend, The Southern Depot, located across Blocks 43 and 47, is an urban lifestyle concept that brings together events, crafts, F&B and retail under one roof. Helmed by the DIDI Lifestyle Group, The Southern Depot is conceptualised around three core passions - Cycle, Crafts and Community.
Cycle
A key component of The Southern Depot is its embrace of two-wheeler culture. At Block 43, you will see an extensive selection of two-wheelers from DIDI's family of brands. Expect to see a full range of motorcycles from Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio, Triumph and Vespa. But it's not just motorbikes - there are also Mondraker bicycles, as well as equipment from Givi and Ohlins.
Crafts
In tandem with the arts culture that has come to characterise Gillman Barracks in recent times, you can also expect artisanal crafts at The Southern Depot. Within the two-wheeler showroom in Block 43, you will find Kaffa Bella, a cafe serving coffee, Acai bowls, as well as a selection of pastries. At Block 47, you can also visit a Weber store to satisfy all your BBQ needs. Not sure how quite to operate those fancy machine? Don't worry, there is an adjacent kitchen space where workshops and classes will be hosted to help you get the best out of your equipment.
Recycled materials also go into the overall design and build of The Southern Depot - besides upcycled materials used to create various structures within the spaces, there are also tables crafted by Concrete Everything, as well as sound dampening panels made by Re-store.
Beyond just retail choices, you can expect a host of workshops and events as well, held in collaboration with partners. A Patched Key Fob Workshop by Re:Store, Leather Coaster Workshop by Kult Bespoke, and a Coffee Appreciation Workshop by Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee and Kaffa Bella are some of the activities that you can look forward to this weekend. In the future, you can also look out for other classes and workshops that span the gamut from kid-friendly activities to fitness classes.
Community
The Southern Depot is also conceptualised as a community space. Beyond spaces for corporate workshops and events, you can also keep an eye out for larger-scale community events, such as weekend markets.
And with anchor F&B tenant Little Island Brewery Co. providing home-brewed craft beer, ample food options and a selection of live music, be prepared to be plenty entertained.
The Southern Depot is located at 43 and 47 Malan Road. The Depot Debut is taking place on 9 March (12:00pm to 9:30pm) and 10 March (10:00am to 6:00pm). You can head here to learn more and find out about upcoming events, book a class, and enquire about venue rental.
