BMW launches new automated driving and parking test site

The BMW Group has opened a new automated driving and parking test site in Sokolov, Czech Republic.
The Future Mobility Development Centre (FDMC), is located at a former mining region, now transformed into an innovation hub. BMW states that the terrain makes the site an excellent location for real-world testing of its automated driving and parking systems, supplementing its own virtual simulations. The FDMC joins BMW's test sites which already include Aschheim near Munich, Miramas in France, and Arjeplog in Sweden.
The new test site not only makes use of green electricity, but also sports a water management system that collects rainwater for track irrigation. The protection of local biodiversity was also considered through the planning process for the site: It now sports a host of amphibian control systems to ensure the safe crossing of animals across the track. Finally, the site was built with 2.2 million cubic meters of soil previously excavated by nearby mining, so no additional land was sealed for the test track, and an area that was already set to lay fallow is now being utilised for technological development.
