In celebration of the 10th London Craft Week, Rolls-Royce is set to debut an exhibition of craftsmanship in Mayfair.
The inspiration behind this year's event is taken from London, the home to some of the most famous luxury locations in the world, many of which are breathtaking examples of design and architecture. Renowned as a luxury capital and also home to many of Rolls-Royce's clientele, the marque believes that London is a fitting choice as this year's theme.
Rolls-Royce artisans wanted to capture both the modern and traditional culture and style of London through a showcase of a rich tapestry of landmarks.
For this year's event, artisans from Bentley's Exterior Surface Centre drew inspiration from the famous haunts of London. This translated into the map of London being presented on a Phantom bonnet. This highly bespoke bonnet features over 20 coats of paint and took over 100 hours to complete. The bonnet was first painted in a base coat of Andalusian White, before a crystal clearcoat was applied.
Then, a single artist sketched the outlines of the map of London. An artisan airbrush was used to accomplish a colour gradient technique, creating a focus on Mayfair, the home of the exhibition. After multiple layers of airbrushing were applied, unique interpretations of London's most iconic landmarks were hand painted onto the bonnet. The piece is finished off with a sign-written 'London' motif and gold leaf highlights.
A team of skilled artisans from the Interior Trim Centre worked together, creating a vibrant door card for this event. The door card showcases 7,700 perforations. Vibrant Turchese leather has been chosen for the base leather on one side of the door. This leather is then covered with a perforated layer of Scivaro Grey, revealing the Turchese undercolour, conjuring the impression of an aerial view of the River Thames.
Similarly, the other side of the door features a Lime Green base leather that is only undercovered by the perforations in the Scrivaro Grey overcoat. This creates a contemporary yet abstract expression of London's world famous architecture.
Finishing off the exhibition would be a picnic table crafted by one artisan from the marque's Interior Surface Centre. The highly skilled artisan spent over 50 hours cutting, pressing and assembling tessellated pieces, crafting the picnic table.
All of these pieces will be displayed in the window of Rolls-Royce's flagship showroom at Berkeley Street, Mayfair, from 13 to 19 May 2024.
